I am using the NASB, for example, and have highlighted certain verses.  When I switch version to, say the ESV, the highlights from the NASB do not appear to carry over to the ESV so that those ESV verses are also highlighted.

Does anyone know if this can be done? Other programs like e-Sword do this and it is really very helpful because you can easily switch versions and still see the verses that you highlighted.  It would not be efficient or desirable to have to manually duplicate the highlights in each version of the Bible that I use.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, no, this is not possible, and here's why:

Mantis allows you to highlight individual words.  This is highly desirable for Bible studies like Precepts, where you need to highlight, say, verbs in one color, etc.  You can highlight different phrases in different colors, too, in any combination.

With this flexibility comes a price, and that is that highlights are tied to a translation (what we call a "volume".)  This is because each translation has different words, and sometimes things are completely different.  Words may not even exist in one translation that are in another one.  So it would not make any sense.

A possible exception could be if there could be a way to get the highlighting from the KJV to the KJVS, since they should have the same words. I did a bit of highlighting in the KJV free version and if there would have been a way for my highlighting to carry over, it could have been incentive to buy the Strongs version.

Here is an alternative: put in an option to allow highlighting to show on other version, but only at the verse level. You will lose, for those other versions, some level of accuracy, but I think that would be preferable to having none at all.  You can even identify that the highlighting may cover more text than the original by using a gradient shade or maybe striped shading for the first character of each verse.

I think this is an important feature if you use several versions (which of course I do )

Thanks.

I certainly wouldn't want to give up being able to highlight individual words with various colors. It might seem that there could be some indication in other versions that there is highlighting in some version, but this could get complicated. Let's say, for instance, that the whole verse in other versions that weren't higlighted were to be highlighted light gray to indicate that there is highlighting in some version. But then you decide to highlight some of that verse in colors. Then you would not only need an indication in that version that there is highlighting in another version, but you also need an indication in the other versions (including ones that have highlingting of their own) that there is highlighting in that version.

I'm not sure if the programming task is practical or not. Perhaps it is best to have a favorite version for highlighting and still be able to highlight things that are distinct in other versions. I just wish I had my highlighting that I have already done in the KJV into a KJVS. I would then use the version with the strongs as my default version and have it in the word mode so I don't have to look at the numbers.

It might be helpful if there was a way to print out a list of verses that have highlighting so I can take the time to go through the NASS that I have (or any other version) to duplicate the work. But there are probably better tasks the programmers can be spending their time on.

I agree too that I would not want to give up the ability to highlight individual words or part of verses.  Maybe the solution would be as follows:

1.  If there is a highlighting in another version, show a colored border around each line of the verse in the current Bible version to indicate that the verse, or some part of it, has been hightlighted in another version.  That way you can still highlight individual verses in any version and get the advantage of a global highlight.

2.  An icon to turn on an off the border highlights would also be helpful as would some way of clicking on the border or verse would take you to the version with the original highlight.

Mantis-- what do you think?

We're considering our options in this department.  Frankly, I'm not sure what the best approach would be at this point.

Would it be possible to provide an option so that the user could select verse highlighting, in which case the highlighting would carry over to other versions. The second option could be word highlighting, which would be version specific.

This would not be easy, due to the way we store the highlight information, so it would require a completely separate feature. We're afraid this might lead to confusion.
