OK, first I was overjoyed this morning that Mantis 4.0 is out. But there is a very big "but!" It no longer shows up as free. Instead, there is a bundled Mantis 4.0 with NASS for 29.99. I have already bought this version when Mantis was free. What does it mean? Will Mantis (free version) be lagging behind or will it now come bundled? App Store right now is still showing the free Mantis as still unupdated as of version 3.1. Weird!

P.S. Mark, the new icon is great, by the way! Very distinguishable from all other competing apps (and competition is great for this field) thereby continuing its unique Mantis character and at the same time it is now more traditional with the cross now being in the icon. Great combination, in my opinion. I like it a lot! I just can't wait to download the app!

I agree. Mark, please post instructions for those who have already purchased this bundle.  The App Store shows $29.99 as the price.  I am hesitant to click buy and not get the "you already purchased this application" and get the update this way!!!

We have waited this long, I can wait longer but won't want to pay $29.99 more!!!!

Thanks

DO NOT buy the NASS version if you have already purchased the NASS version from our web site.  We submitted this NASS bundled version as our first "branded" product many weeks ago, and for some reason, Apple decided to release it first, before the free version.

The free 4.0 version will be identical to this NASS version, so please just wait for it.

If you're in the market for our NASS product anyway, though, then go ahead and purchase it from the App Store.

Will do (not buy!) until the free version is released.  Thanks for such quick response!!!

How long ago was the free version submitted? Longer than the NASS?

The latest upload to Apple is now about 15 days old.  It's never gone more than 7 days for us in the past, so I'm not sure what's going on.  We've contacted Apple a few times, but have not yet received a response.

Mark, thank you for keeping us in the loop. I wonder if Apple "forgot" that there is a free version also in addition to the bundle that was released a few days ago?

How many bundles do you intend on releasing? I was curious whether or not in the future (and I do believe the iPhone OS is a viable handheld platform and will remain so for many years to come) if you have, say, 5-6 bundles (I don't know how many you plan on doing), will there possibly be a gap timewise when these bundles are updated by Apple and people will have to wait for their bundle? What if I don't want to use the bundle anymore and just switch to the free app with translations purchased through your website? Will I be able to just re-download the primary translation that came with the bundle?

Personally, I don't think bundles are a good idea, but I can see how people, who are unaware there are more translations available other than the free KJV, will be able to see them when browsing the App Store.

Today we uploaded 5 new versions:  NKJV, KJVS, NASB, MSG, and ESV.

In every case, each version will have the same basic Mantis Bible Study software.  The only difference is the content included with the version.

If you purchase any version, it will automatically recognize and work with any purchases you have previously made (or any future purchases you make.)  Everything is interchangable, and should work together, regardless of whether you purchase from the App Store or our web site.

We've done our best to make this as flexible and as simple as possible.  That being said, we're prepared to answer the same basic questions over and over again.  No problem -- patience, we've got!

Some people might feel that something that is free isn't good enough to try. I can see a value in the bundle for them. But I can see what seems could be an issue if Apple needs to approve a half dozen versions of the same update.

Without knowing just how things work, isn't it possible to have one program file that needs to be approved by Apple and all that happens when you choose the bundle is that a batch file is run which downloads the program plus the purchased version? That way Apple would only need to approve the main program update once.

Oh, great point re: free vs. paid-for as far as product visibility in the App Store! I agree in that case.

As far as the long-awaited 4.0 update.. It's been 18 days now since Mark and co. submitted it to Apple and 5 days since the NASS was released.

Clearly, there is no technical problem but a clerical one, in my opinion. I am sure Mark has tried contacting Apple about this, but it seems like at this point someone simply messed up and somewhere somehow this update was ignored..

Something has definitely gone wrong on Apple's side... There is a time for patience, and then, there is a time for action - somebody at Mantis, please resolve this issue.  And please fix it so the next "free" upgrade will not be "lost" again...

With grace, but firm.

Thanks.

We'd LOVE to resolve this.  Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do.  Apple has all the power here, and for some reason, they're not responding to us.  It's very frustrating for us, but we agreed to abide by their rules and their authority when we decided to develop for the iPhone.

We'll continue to do whatever we can to get it released, though.

Wow, another 8 days on and still no v4?

Any status, any feedback from Apple at least on what's happening to delay it?

Thank you for any info you may be able to provide.

We called Apple and requested that they escalate the review of our 4.0 update, so a formal report was filed.  The next day (yesterday) we got an email from the review team that basically said "your application is requiring further time for review, thanks for your patience."

So we have heard from them, but there is still no substantial news.

Maybe this sounds cynical, but presumably Apple get a commission on every sale through the App Store, and hence it is conceivable that they are giving revenue-generating apps higher priority in the review-and-release process than free apps? Is there a workaround here? Would it be possible to issue a discount coupon to people who have already bought one of the translations that is bundled and available on the App Store? i.e. either to get the bundle for free via Apple's Store, or to have a credit on the Mantis Store after buying the bundle? Feeling your pain, not just mine. Mark

I would hope that's not the case, and that Apple is reviewing apps on a first-come, first-served basis.

The only workaround at this point is that if you buy any of the App Store versions, the program will recognize all your web purchases and other (Mantis) App Store purchases and allow you to download those to the purchased (4.0) version.  So if you're in the market for any of the items available in the App Store, that's the quickest way to get onto 4.0.

We submitted other 4.0 versions as well, which have not yet been approved, such as the NASB, KJVS, NETP, and the new FREE version.  It's possible the new FREE version will be available before the 4.0 update comes out.  If that's the case, then everyone can just download the new free one and migrate their stuff over to that version.

Keep reading James 1:2-4 regarding this whole thing, and you'll feel better. :)

I'm a little confused. Why does the description for the free version of Mantis Bible Study in the app store read "version 4.0" but when I download the program it's still version 3.1? I know that you said that apple still has now uploaded the free 4.0 version, but why does the description read 4.0?

When we submitted the 4.0 version with it's description, Apple updates the description of the existing app. I think this is a bug in the way the app store works.

We first sent the 4.0 update to Apple in December. They found some technical problems with the file and we sent back updated versions to them a couple of times. In each case, this all transpired within a week.

The latest version we sent was uploaded on January 2, 2009, and the only feedback we've received from Apple since then is that "they need additional time to review it" and "they are still working on reviewing it."

We placed a support call asking them to look into this, and logged a support incident, but the only response we got was another email that told us "they're still working on reviewing it."

We can only be patient at this point, I guess. It's up to Apple.

Are we losing sales? I don't know, and I don't really care about that. I do care that we have customers who have seen the 4.0 features and want them. They're upset, and that bothers me. I just want everyone to be able to share the benefits of the hard work we've done.

Is there a way to distribute a "Beta" version of 4.0 outside of the Apple App Store channel? We already download other stuff directly. Maybe Apple is upset that Mantis is selling supplemental stuff without their involvement (read that as without them getting a cut).

We already have a Beta program in accordance with our SDK agreement with Apple. We are limited to 100 unique devices, however, so we are severely limited here. Our Beta program is used only to test the features of our new releases, and our beta testers give great feedback and report bugs to us. So it's not really a distribution mechanism, per se.

As far as Apple "not getting a cut" -- this is not our intention at all, and we would welcome an arrangement where we could distribute all our content through Apple. We'd happily pay a percentage. As a matter of fact, we've started to offer "branded" versions in the App Store which they're taking a percentage of. We're very happy with that.

The only reason we're selling our content directly is because there is no way to give our customers the flexibility and choice they want using Apple's distribution mechanism. Their system does not allow us to sell (or give away) a base product and then add content to it. If it did, we'd be the first to sign up!

Many other companies are using the same model we are using, and Apple so far has allowed it in all cases we've seen. They have said nothing to us about our distribution mechanism. But that's not to say that Apple can't change their policy at any time. I just hope if they do, they offer us an alternative using their system that allows our customers to mix and match content, and to purchase whatever they choose at any time.

Apparently direct downloads of the supplemental stuff is OK.

Olive Tree (Bible Reader) started with selling through the App Store with translation bundles. In their forum, they were under the impression that selling the translations from their web site, as Mantis does, is forbidden. But with the latest version, Bible Reader users can now load translations from the Olive Tree web site.

(I has also gotten Bible Reader and recently downloaded a couple of translations I had previously bought with the Palm PDA version.)

Would it be possible to provide those with the "free" version with some sort of upgrade code to a particular "paid" version for no cost? The criteria to qualify would be that they bought a Bible translation that is used for the "paid' version.

For example I got Mantis Bible when only the "free" version was available from the App Store and bought the ESV version from the Mantis web site. If this is done, I would qualify for a code to get the "paid" Mantis Bible with ESV from the App Store.

I wish we could do that, but Apple doesn't really allow it. We're stuck until Apple releases the upgrade.

Just as an extra attempt, we uploaded a new version called "Mantis Bible Study: FREE Edition" that looks and feels like the new paid versions, but is free. Perhaps they'll release that before the update.

They've been sitting on that version as well, though, for at least a few weeks now.

You'll need to wait until Apple releases the update. The only work-around is that, if you were in the market to purchase one of the 4.0 editions in the App Store (NASS, MSG, ESV, NKJV) and you purchased one from the App Store, our program would sense that you already purchased the KJVS and allow you to download the KJVS to that 4.0 version.

If we want to "remind" Apple about the pending update, who should we contact? I would love to be a squeaky wheel, but I can't figure out who to bug. It looks like the discussion groups are black holes as far as Apple is concerned (they are only good for users helping users).

I just emailed Apple support using the form at http://www.apple.com/uk/support/itunes/store/apps/ and quoting my original order reference for Mantis Bible Study and making it clear that it was the Mantis Bible Study Free Edition that I was concerned about, i.e. http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=286041914&mt=8

Will let you know what transpires.

Here's the query I put to Apple ...

Hello,

Regarding the application Mantis Bible Study Free Edition:
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=286041914&mt=8

The version on the App Store is 3.2 whereas the version described on the App Store is version 4.0. I contacted the developer and they told me:

We first sent the 4.0 update to Apple in December. They found some technical problems with the file and we sent back updated versions to them a couple of times. In each case, this all transpired within a week.

The latest version we sent was uploaded on January 2, 2009, and the only feedback we've received from Apple since then is that "they need additional time to review it" and "they are still working on reviewing it."

We placed a support call asking them to look into this, and logged a support incident, but the only response we got was another email that told us "they're still working on reviewing it."

It has now been 7 weeks since the company submitted the revised version 4.0 to you and I don't understand why it has not been reviewed. I haven't noticed this kind of delay with other applications on the App Store and so I wonder if this one has somehow been forgotten? I'd appreciate it if you could look into it and get it on track.

I do not work for the developer. I am a user who is really looking forward to the new features in the latest version.

many thanks,

Mark Hadfield (UK)

Hi Mark,

It's Victoria again, the application team is working on it and will post it when it is ready. They are reviewing it and they will let us kno if it is still not up in and running in 2 or more weeks.

I hope this helps you. If not and you need further assistance or have any questions, feel free to reply to this email and I will be happy to assist. It was a pleasure assisting you Mark. We here at the iTunes Store appreciate your business.

Thanks and Have an Safe Day.

Simply unbelievable at this point. To have the free version still pending with no information (from apple) as to when it will be approved an no information as to what the hold-up is (clearly given the other versions have been approved it would seem to me they are just so buried with submissions that they have little hope of catching up in any reasonable time frame at this point.)

Not a business model (apple's) to be proud of in this area at least.

Personally, I'm embarrassed for them. It just makes no sense, and makes them look bad. And usually, they are known for quality and great customer service. Look at every poll related to computer service -- they win every time.

Hopefully things will turn around soon there.

I have a question. With the paid 4.0 bundles, can you re-download everything you've bought off the mantisbible.com web site like you can with Mantis Free?
Also, why the price difference with the American Standard and all of the other versions? 29.99 vs. 17.99??? Thanks!

First answer: YES. If you purchase any 4.0 version, it will instantly recognize anything you've purchased before and will immediately put it in the "Ready to Download" section. It's pretty smart like that.

Second, the NASS (New American Standard with Strongs) contains the full text of the NASB Bible, NASB translation notes, plus strongs numbers, plus integrated Hebrew and Greek Strongs Dictionaries. It's a pretty hefty resource, and is a really popular product. It also includes the KJV text for free.

Today Apple released "Mantis Bible Study: FREE Edition."

This is a separate app from the regular free one, but it IS 4.0, and it's compatible with your old version.

So here's how you can get 4.0 for free today:

Back up your notes in 3.1.0.
Download and install Mantis Bible Study: FREE Edition.

Restore your notes.

Download all your purchases again. They'll show up instantly and automatically.

Scratch that last message.

Apple just released the regular 4.0 update. Just wait a couple of hours and it should show up as an update. Back up your notes first, just to be safe, though.

It is finally out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One suggestion: Have you ever thought about putting in reverse color like Stanza does, where the background is black and the letters are white which makes it easier on the eyes when reading a long time?

Thank you,

We are considering this, but for us it is way more complicated. We have regular text, strongs definitions, translators notes, personal notes, grammatical codes, etc. and they all use different text colors.

Great news on Apple releasing v4!

I'm loving the new Strongs integration between Bible and Dictionary. And the Reading Plans are handy too.

Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!
