I just updated to version 4.0. But before doing so, I ran a backup of all my Notes and Bookmarks. The application said it ran the backup successfully. I then updated to 4.0. Everything went just fine. I launched the new application and was looking it over. I checked my Notes and Bookmarks and everything looked fine. I decided I would go ahead and run a Restore just in case the new version didn't like something about my Notes from the old version. MISTAKE!!!! I'm not sure where it got it's restore information from, but it was from a MUCH earlier Backup I had done some time ago. ALL MY MOST RECENT NOTES AND BOOKMARKS ARE ALL GONE!!!!! And there were quite a few of them... Very disappointed!!!

We're really sorry this happened to you, and we're investigating why it happened. It's possible that it happened during our server upgrade this morning, and that the timing was just very unfortunate.

We will look into to putting extra safeguards into the next version to keep this from happening to anyone again. There's got to be a way we can catch things like this before they happen. We'll find it.

I contacted Support on this matter. They looked into and said they don't have the most recent backup that I had just ran.
They said "I'm really sorry this happened to you -- I've never seen this happen before."
So much for that...

Best thing to do when doing any back up, is to log into the Notes Editor in your browser before clearing it all off. Just to see if everything is there. Just to be safe.

Something similar happened to me, it was not Mantis' fault... it was mine... I clicked "back up now" instead of "restore"... this overwrote 4 months worth of notes (taken almost everyday) with nothing. I gasped when it happened. Now I check the server to make sure before I clear it.

I feel your pain.

Another safety measure you can take is to copy all of of your notes from the notes editor into notepad and save it to your hard drive. If worse comes to worst, you may lose your bookmarks and highlighting, but at least you can salvage your notes.

Thanks for the input. It looks like I'm having issues with Mantis not actually receiving Backups from my iPod. I've added more notes and tried to Backup and Restore again. My online notes do not change after performing a Backup and my iPod is wiped again after I Restore. So, my iPod is not talking to their server. They are looking into it. Their support response time is amazing!! Very impressed!!

Would really be nice if Mantis would keep your last few Backups on their server so if (i mean WHEN) someone messes up, they could at least revert back to a previous version and not lose EVERYTHING.

Update... They fixed the problem I've been experiencing. It was an issue with my backup file permissions. Mark figured it out and got me working again! Thanks Mark!!!

We're actually working on keeping multiple backups and hope to implement that soon.

FYI:

We have just implemented a change on the server that keeps multiple backups. So each time you run a backup, each version is saved in a backup folder on the server.

While this doesn't allow you yet to restore from these older backups, at least it will give us something to fall back on if a user accidentally overwrites an old backup by mistake.

You can always email us and we can retrieve your older backups for you.

In the future we'll put a front-end on this that lets you manage these files from the web site.

Any thought to implementing a backup/restore solution using e-mail? It would be nice to be able send all my notes/bookmarks by e-mail to myself. That way I could have as many backups as I want.

We're looking into that, but that'll be a more extensive change than what we've just done.

One of the other iPhone Bible program (otherwise no where near does as functional as Mantis) the backup and restore by e-mail as well as letting users share bookmarks. So if you put together a great set of bookmarks related to a study, you could e-mail just that bookmark folder and share them with a friend. Not sure if there is all that much demand for such functionality, but thought it was worth mentioning.
