We're looking at the SDK now. Hopefully it'll be a small job to tweak Mantis so it'll take advantage of the iPad.

Just think about how awesome it wil be to go from mantis study bible to typing sermons or lessons out in pages then saving and teaching that lesson all from the ipad. Just awesome!

The question was ask under "Ask the developers". But thats fine to ask again. Maybe we can stir up the interest enough. Mantis will already work on the ipad just not as clear as it will be if they use the new SDK. I hope they do. But either way Mantis will be on the ipad and I for one cant wait!

Yes, Mantis will work exactly the same as it does now when the iPad comes out. We plan, however, to make some modifications to take advantage of the iPad screen. We're not sure, though, how extensive those changes will be until we take a look at the new SDK.

How awesome would it be to have some page turning, with the ability to do inline notes, and have a 2 finger swipe gesture to close inline notes.

By the way, Accordance Bible is seriously looking to, so it looks like I'll have two options since I've purchased modules for both Mantis and for Accordance.

I own the full Accordance for Mac and to be honest I use Mantis way more. I like getting to pick what I want to take up space on my HD. For some reason Accordance is just to much that I just don't use much. I have lots of money in it though.

I am not sure that a straight scaling up of Mantis would work as seamlessly as it does on the iPhone.

The point is that, while it makes sense to maximize/optimize the screen estate by removing extra junk in a small screen, in a larger screen it would seem quite a weak choice. I think the inline notes editor is a rather good example for it: it makes perfect sense in the iPhone to keep it within the main text in order not to waste screen (adding a frame) and time (making it a separate screen), but in the iPad it would be rather strange not to have it in a pop-over window (even at the cost of few masked words). Same for the BYOSB (although in that case it could be strange to drill down through the options using a cascade of pop-overs).
Similarly, while the Compare/Commentary/Define screens are quite necessary in the iPhone (you can't visualize more than a certain amount of information in the small screen without messing up clarity), it would make more sense to split the much larger screen in panes to let different translations/dictionaries/commentaries flow in sync (like in accordance).

Another point is the scrolling vs page turning argument: I love the scrolling in Mantis. It reinvented a long lost way of reading, and I don't think page turning would be as effective as scrolling on the iPhone. On the other hand, we are quite used to book pages, and having a 'static' image helps a lot with memorization. With a larger screen page turning could be a better option.

Finally, I don't think a parallel with Accordance is correct. They are impressive tools, but the purpose is quite different (even if the target population is quite overlapping). Accordance is a professional tool, to be used on a computer TOGETHER with other tools (let they be word processors, bibliography managers, etc). On the other hand Mantis for iPod/iPad - from what I understood - is mainly aimed to prayer. It gives you plenty of material for studying seriously: praying involves a lot of studying... yet it is rather self-contained (forcedly, given the absence of multitasking), something no professional can be very happy about.
Can they compete? They could, but they should move into each other's field. Mantis might compete with Accordance on the Mac if a Mac version is ever released, Accordance might compete on the iPad.
Should they compete? Not necessarily.
Ultimately, on the iPad it could end up being just a matter of economics: unless substantial flaws will be present in one of the competing applications, people will tend to stick to the application for what they have paid for the content.

I have all together stopped using Accordance and Logos. Both of which I have many hundreds of dollars invested in. I love the way Mantis works and use it daily for the classes I teach and the sermons I preach. I teach and preach 5 times a week and travel weekly. Mantis has made my study time more productive. No wasted time going through volumes that I dont use. Mantis with copy and paste allows me to study and preach straight from my iphone. But my eyes are excited about Mantis on a bigger screen. I plan to study and preach straight from my ipad. I already have over 80 messages saved on my iphone. Love Mantis.

This was the question I came here to ask. I will be hopefully playing with my new iPad next Saturday the 3rd on initial deliever date and will be writing up a review for CCMag and Notebooks.com. So I really hope that Mantis looks and works great on it.

We are working on an iPad version that will take advantage of the iPad format. It won't be ready on Saturday, but hopefully some time in April, though.

We will post iPad information on the web site (once we get our iPads and can test it.) We will also send out an email to all subscribers letting you know what we've found and what our development plans are for the iPad.

I'm waiting on the Wi-fi 3G ipad to come out at the end of the month anyway. My ipad purchase really is based a lot on using Mantis.

The iPhone version of Mantis Bible Study doesn't seem to work on my iPad. The scrolling of the Bible just won't work. It just stays in the same place. (The screen flashes.) That's all I've done so far.

Yes. Mantis on iPad is barely useable in it's current state when using it the way I do on my iPhone.

We have identified the problem and will be uploading a new version of Mantis that addresses the scrolling issues (as well as a few other issues). Hopefully, you'll see the update next week.
