I'm really enjoying your app for the iPhone, and think it has great potential.

The only thing that I have not liked is the navigation.  I think having to go through 3 screens to get to a verse is a little too much.  Is there any chance of putting this all on one screen?  Like in a rolling spinner to let a person choose the book, chapter, and verse from one screen?

In its current format, the first two screens are okay.  I just find the verse screen to be wasteful and wish that it were available on a previous screen.

Also, it would be great to swipe the screen from left to right (or vice versa) to change to the next chapter.  Either that, or make the entire book available at once without having to switch to a different chapter.

Blessings,
Brandon

Hi Brandon!

We're well into the development of 2.0 which addresses some of these issues, but not necessarily all of them.  I personally am not a fan of the rolling spinner, and that would mean we'd lose the chapter header summaries.  2.0 has a couple of things that make navigation faster, but it's still probably going to be a couple of taps.  (Even on a roller, though, you've got a couple of scrolls and tap at least.)

Also, remember that with our software you can navigate to a specific verse -- that's pretty important to us.  That does add an extra tap, but I think it's worth it to open up the page to the exact location you want.  I think we've got a new "Go" button at the top of the verse screen that'll just take you to verse one, but I'm not sure if that'll be in the final 2.0 product.

Again, the verse chooser screen has headers, which I find really handy to quickly locate the start of a passage.

I'm not sure about left/right swipe -- I'll look into that one.

Thanks for the reply!

That does make sense.  It isn't that time consuming.  I was thinking that it might be nice, instead of the spinner, to just have all the verse numbers show up on the same screen (without having to scroll) ... but that would defeat the section names (pericopes) right?

But the pericopes are tied in to the translation right?  So different versions might not have the same pericopes, or no pericopes at all?

Blessings,
Brandon

Yes, they are tied to the translation.  The solution I have for this may or may not make it into 2.0, but it's actually been on the drawing board from the beginning.  It's a toggle that'd let you switch views between the full table view (with section names) and a quick-view with just buttons for the numbers.  That'd give the best of both worlds.  But alas, there's a long list of features for 2.0, and something's got to be cut if we're ever going to get it out the door...

You might consider adding columns to the selection screens. By using short names for the books it should be possible to fit 5 or 6 columns. This would leave enough hot spots to have an entire testament on the screen. A quick flip up or down to switch between the old and new testaments and eliminate the first selection level. A similar treatment can be used for chapters and verses.

That's exactly what I was talking about with my previous post, only I neglected to carry it over to the book selection screen as well.  So you'd have Gen Exo Lev Num Deu on buttons.

The biggest decision on that front is the tradeoff between how many buttons you can fit on one screen vs. how big you make the buttons.  In other words, would you rather get everything on a single screen, but have tiny buttons, or have to scroll between, say, two screens-full and have nice large, easy-to-hit buttons?

With 5 columns and the existing 8 rows, that would provide 40 hotspots. From the looks of it, these hotspots would be bigger than the up, down, and version selection buttons at the top of the text screen.

I have several other bibles and some have spinners. I hate spinners. One of the things I have loved about mantis is three clicks to anywhere in the Bible. Don't change a thing, or if you do, make it an optional setting so those of us who like 3 clicks can keep it simple as 1-2-3.

We have no plans to change this. If we do, the only thing I'd change is to possibly make it faster.

What about a button in the chapter screen that would bring you at verse 1? This would save the extra screen to the verse in case you want tjust the chapter. Besides, it could be me, but I'm way faster at choosing the first verse of a chapter and scrolling to the needed verse than having to scroll/find the appropriate verse and then click on it.

have a good sunday,
