It's not really a bug, but it's bugging me. just about every instance in the NT where Jesus' spoken words are quoted there appears to be a problem. Each verse starts with quotation marks, but isn't closed with them. Actually, it's probably more of a case that there are opening quotes when they are not needed.

If there is a block of text that stretches over 5 verses then there is an opening quote at the start of every verse, not just the first one, and a closing quote at the end of the last one. I think the middle ones are being inserted by error.

I'm using mantis 4.0.0 Free with additionally downloaded NASB (Which has been re-downloaded for the new version.)

Just to make life more complicated, it happens in other quoted text as well. e.g. numbers 31:25-30. vs 28 has opening quotes inserted half way through the discourse.

Software, don't you just love it :)

Well done. It's a great application.

God bless.

Do you have a specific example we can review?

Anywhere there is quoted text. Try john 3:16-18. Every verse starts with quotes, but there aren't any closing quotes.

This is not an error! If you look at any hard copy of the NASB this is the way it is printed. So this is true to the publisher's format. I know it seems strange but that's the way they printed it and you cannot change that without violating copyright law.

Yeah, it looked strange to me, but that's how it is.

Point 2 of the Fourfold Aim of The Lockman Foundation, (the publisher of the NASB) states "They shall be grammatically correct."
As strange as it may seem, using quotation marks at the beginning of each new verse or paragraph is standard grammatical practice. In other words the closing quotation marks are only used at the end of the quoted passage. Thus the example of John 3:16-18 is grammatically correct and the closing quotation marks only come at the end of verse 21 when Jesus has ended this discourse.

No, this is not a bug or a mistake.

It's corect use of punctuation, in general, not just in the Bible.

If one person is talking for several paragraphs, each new paragraph has an open quote. But a close quote only at the final paragraph. So in a conversation of alternating speakers you can then see when the other person begins, even if they are not explicitly named.

Look in any novel and you will see this.

E.g., here's Sherlock Holmes speaking for several paras:

I find the program e-sword the most helpful because is has all this in one and you download other translations and a lot more and it is free I found it on UK Dissertation . It should have any translation you want with few exceptions. the Bibles and other features are additional downloads, also free
