In the walkthrough on the web site it shows an asterisk at the first two verses of Genesis 1. Tapping the asterisk should bring up the notes. I don't see the asterisk there or anywhere else. Am I not doing something right?

The asterisks are there. You probably just have them turned off. If you tap "Tools" then tap the asterisk in the toolbar, you can toggle them on and off. (If the asterisk in the toolbar is gray, they are turned off. If it's purple, they're turned on.)
